Land Trust Faces Major Funding Challenge

The Western Virginia Land Trust has lost a $40,000 grant that makes up 25% of our annual funding! And we need your help so we can keep on protecting western Virginia's farms, forests, waterways, and rural landscapes.

This grant, from a Pittsburgh-based foundation created by Mellon heir Cordelia Scaife May, has provided a half-million dollars to help save land in western Virginia since 1996--at absolutely no expense to the citizens of western Virginia.

But Mrs. May passed away in 2005, and her foundation has decided to focus its efforts on western Pennsylvania. We've been blessed, but the time has come for western Virginia--not western Pennsylvania--to fund our local land trust.

"I believe it is the inherent responsibility of all Virginians to preserve wildlife, habitat, traditions and the values that we hold so dearly. Through the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation I am doing my part to preserve our natural world, and I encourage you to join the WVLT and take an active role in preserving the natural resources of Southwest Virginia through voluntary land conservation."  - Ward Burton, winner 2002 Daytona 500

Why is Your Membership Important?

Financial Security: Only a large and diverse membership base can provide the security we need to continue saving land. While we work hard for grant funding, membership dues are vital to fund day-to-day operations. For a minimum of $25 you can help keep our staff working on deals to save our scenery and sense of place.

Credibility and Clout:  Your membership strengthens our grant proposals to foundations and government agencies by showing our broad-grass roots support.  When we approach elected officials to promote conservation issues, your voice will be added to our appeal.

Eyes, Ears and Word of Mouth:   We count on our members to help promote conservation and alert us to opportunities. With the information you'll gain from newsletters and special events, you could be the next member who leads us to conserve a special place.

More Land Saved: With a larger membership and donor base, we will be able to expand staff and programs as we race against the clock to preserve more of our vanishing natural heritage.

WVLT is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia
