2012 Race for Open Space 5K Classic and 3K Run/Walk

The fourth annual Race for Open Space will be held on June 2, 2012 at Green Hill Park, in Roanoke County, VA, west of Salem. The 5K Classic will begin at 8:30 AM and the 3K Run/Walk will begin at 8:45 AM. All proceeds benefit the land preservation efforts of the Western Virginia Land Trust.

NEW THIS YEAR: We’re pleased to announce the addition of our 5K Race for Open Space Classic, in addition to our 3K Race for Open Space Run/Walk! The 5K Classic will provide an excellent venue for more competitive runners or those who just want to try a longer distance. The 3K Run/Walk is perfect for children, families and active adults.

BE A FUNDRAISER!: Raise money to help the land trust save land! Encourage your family, friends and colleagues to sponsor you as you “race for open space.” Set up your own personal fundraising page and share the link. Everyone who raises $100 or more will receive a special prize, and the top overall fundraiser will receive a prize pack.

PACKET PICK-UP: Pre-race packet pickup will be held from 4-7 pm on June 1 at Fleet Feet Sports in Roanoke. Registration and packet pickup will begin at 7:30 am the day of the race.

DIRECTIONS: From Interstate 81, take exit 137 and turn right at end of ramp. Proceed to stoplight at intersection of W. Main St./US 460/11 and turn right. Proceed about 3/4 mile and turn left on Diuguids Rd. Cross the railroad tracks and river and turn right into Green Hill Park. Turn right into the first parking lot.

COURSE: The beautiful race course runs along the Roanoke River Greenway next to the calm and shady Roanoke River before transitioning to wooded trails and finishing on a grassy field. Please, no strollers or dogs.

T-SHIRT: All participants will receive a 100 percent organic cotton race t-shirt printed with environmentally-friendly inks.

AWARDS: The top three male and female finishers in each age group in both the 3K Run/Walk and 5K Classic will receive awards, in addition to the top three overall male and female finishers in each event. In addition, all participants will receive a BioGreen biodegradable, recyclable and dishwasher-safe sports bottle.
