Help us Save our Scenery!

"What a fine organization. The Western Virginia Land Trust doesn't just talk about the environment. They do something about it." - Sky Preece. Sky worked with the Western Virginia Land Trust to conserve wetlands and stream frontage on his Botetourt County farm.

As a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the Western Virginia Land Trust relies on the generosity of its supporters–people who care about our quality of life in southwest Virginia and want to see it preserved for their children and their children’s children. You don’t have to own land to support the land trust–in fact, nearly all of our financial supporters are “city dwellers” who appreciate and want to protect the gorgeous backdrop of our daily lives.

Your financial support stays local and is put to work right here in our part of Virginia. It will help WVLT’s heroic staff of two do some very important tasks:

  • Educate local landowners about conservation easements.Staff spends time in the field, on the farms, around the kitchen tables and at public meetings, helping landowners learn about conservation options for their properties and guiding them though the process of recording a conservation easement.

  • Monitor WVLT’s conserved properties. WVLT holds 40 conservation easements that protect more than 15,000 acres of land and 33 miles of streams. Staff spends hundreds of person-hours in the field each year monitoring these properties and meeting with landowners to ensure that the terms of the conservation easements aren’t being violated.

The Western Virginia Land Conservation Fund

In 2010, WVLT established the Western Virginia Land Conservation Fund at the Foundation for Roanoke Valley. This fund provides the land trust with a permanent source of funds to help offset its annual operating costs, while also providing a pool of money should the land trust ever need to defend a conservation easement in a court of law (which could cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars).

Your contribution to this fund is tax-deductible and helps ensure the long-term financial stability of the land trust. For more information, view our brochure or contact Interim Director David Perry at (540) 985-0000 or dperry@westernvirginialandtrust.org.
